Canon

Canon EOS (5D, 7D and 1D) is primarily a SLR camera that has the ability to capture HD and produce H.264 QuickTimes (without Timecode). The camera can be set to shoot at a variety of frame rates but we suggest shooting at 25fps. The Canon is relatively affordable and due to its size/weight highly portable. It can also be used to produce high quality stills for shoots involving animation.

Pre Shoot

The H.264 codec is a presentation format and may appear soft.

This camera is not suited for fast camera moves, whip pans, jerky moves or handheld camerawork. Ideally we would advise that the camera is locked off.

We strongly recommend applying timecode to H.264 rushes. This is something we can add and will negate the need for any manual conform/eye-matching.

EOS cameras are generally not recommended for shoots involving green screen due to the heavily compressed nature of the H.264 codec. But with pre-planning and advice from our talented team of FX artists, Golden Square has had great success compositing shots in Flame & Nuke.

Please treat the Canon as you would a film camera as there can be time and cost implications in leaving the camera running.

Workflow to Offline

The native H.264 files are not suitable for editing and we would recommend transcoding to Apple ProRes when working in Final Cut Pro.

Workflow towards Online

Once we receive the EDL we will conform from the original H.264 (with handles) & export for in-suite grade or Telecine. These exports can take the form of uncompressed QuickTime or DPX.
