Square Art - "Reworking Old Masters"
Budding fine artists from across London's creative community gathered on Thursday 17th July at Golden Square Post for this year's Square Art Exhibition.
The event, which was the fourteenth Square Art, challenged adlands creatives to produce works dedicated to, or inspired by "Reworking Old Masters"
First place was awarded to George Belcher, a producer with Soho collective Storyboards for his painting Munch Scream with Japanese Girl.
"It's inspired by that insular feeling of helplessness captured in Munch that can suddenly strike from nowhere", Belcher says.
Second place went to freelance Art Director Simeon Tennant's Miro with third place going to Mark Beardall, Flame Operator at Golden Square.
Judge Robin Wight, Chairman of WCRS and Engine said:
"Square Art is a brilliant initiative exploring the boundary between art and advertising. Challenging creative people to re-interpret Old Masters in new ways produced some original and well crafted solutions. The winner shone through by re-expressing Munch's famous Scream into today's Tube in a way that was both striking and engaging."
Golden Square founder Ewan MacLeod said:
"The standard of the artwork submitted into this year's Square Art competition was exceptionally high and we were delighted to have Robin Wight, Mike Exon and Waldemar Januszczak judging the show. The winning painting - George's re-interpretation of Munch's Scream really stood out as an outstanding piece of art"
